Articles on this page: Welcome to Our New Home and to Our Future! Welcome to Our New Home and to Our Future!
Indeed, some things are worth waiting for. Our Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC), named in honor of the late State Representative Joseph Scelsi, is open for business! For the first time in our region's history intercity bus, local bus, and intercity rail services will all stop at one facility providing direct pedestrian access to the central business district of the Berkshires. With the various services at the ITC being introduced in phases this month, our Grand Opening Celebration will take place next Monday with Senator Edward Kennedy and Congressman John Olver heading the list of elected officials, transportation officials, and honored guests who will join us. We hope that you plan to visit our new home and see our fabulous addition to downtown Pittsfield and the region. In the meantime, please take a few minutes to enjoy these pages, made possible by our generous sponsors and business partners, to reflect on the extensive history of public transportation in the Berkshires (the "Then") and to also learn a little more of what this new facility means for everyone (the "Now").
I hope that you gain a better understanding of all that we do for people throughout our twenty-three member communities. For example, too many associate the BRTA with ONLY the blue buses observed on our Berkshire roadways. Did you know that we also broker over 84,000 trips a year for human service agency transportation in addition to 56,000 trips for elderly and disabled individuals? Did you know that we procure lift-equipped vehicles for agencies like councils-on-aging and then subsidize many of their trips? And now, we have a fabulous new facility that will enhance safety, comfort and convenience and hopefully entice more people to save the gas and wear and tear on their cars. Thanks for helping us keep the Berkshires on the move. PS: Did I mention that the BRTA turns 30 years old next month?
