The department also maintains separate sewer and drainage systems of the Town of Dalton. Numerous upgrades and improvements were made to both of these systems in the previous year. Also in the last three years the Town has used Chapter 90 funds, state-aid and Town funding to resurface approximately twenty-seven streets, which represents almost 10 miles of roadway. In 2004 the entire, 2 mile, length of Dalton Division Road was resurfaced using these funds. The department maintains four cemeteries:; East Main Street, Main Street, Fairview, and Ashuelot Street. The Cemetery Trustees set policy and make long-range plans and regulations for the cemeteries, while the Department maintains the grounds and physical day-to-day operations of the cemeteries. Ed Cady is the Town's Burial Agent and Cemetery Trustee, Treasurer; he is assisted by board members Marjorie O’Keefe, Chairperson, and Jack Cooney, Secretary. The Department also maintains the equipment and grounds of the Town's four parks and various properties. All of this is accomplished by an experienced and dedicated staff of eight personnel directed by foreman David Laviolette and Superintendent Jim "Cutter" Galliher. Communications Center (Operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week & 365 days a year) The town has its own dispatch center located in the fire station on Flansburg Avenue. All 911 emergency calls as well as non-emergency numbers for the police, fire, highway/cemetery, and water departments are received by the center, as well as calls for the animal control officer. Having joined the e-911 system, the center has monitors that automatically show the location from which a 911 call is made. The center also handles calls for Hinsdale and Windsor. Michael J. Norton is director of communications, overseeing five full-time and five part-time dispatchers. There is an annual average of 20,000 calls per year, of which approximately 1,500 are 911. Town Hall & Library The Dalton Free Library, the Police Station, and all town offices are located in the Town Hall on the corner of Main Street and Carson Avenue. Built in 1887, the building has been renovated to comply with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. The building also contains a small museum maintained by the Dalton Historical Commission. The Town Hall is open for town business Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and most offices are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays. The entrance is on Carson Avenue as is the entrance to the police station.
