Schools

Dalton is the largest of the seven towns in the Central Berkshire Regional School District, which is the largest in the state. The other towns are Windsor, Cummington, Peru, Hinsdale, Washington and Becket. As of September 1st 2,151 students were enrolled throughout the district, according to preliminary figures. Elementary age children from Windsor and Cummington attend the Berkshire Trail School in Cummington. Children from Peru and Hinsdale attend Kittredge School in Hinsdale. Children from Becket and Washington attend the Becket Washington School.

The administrative offices of the Central Berkshire Regional School District are located at 254 Hinsdale Road. Superintendent of the district is Thomas Potter. Assistant Superintendent is Paul Swem. Robert Tensel is Business Manager. Director of Special Education is Pamela Kenyon.

Craneville Elementary School

Children in Dalton attend Craneville Elementary School at 71 Park Avenue. Enrollment this year is 476. Bruce A. Collina is principal of Craneville.

Nessacus Regional Middle School

Children in grades 6 through 8 from all the towns in the district attend Nessacus Middle School at 35 Fox Road. Enrollment at the new building is 547, down slightly from last year. The school has been beautifully landscaped with bright red mulch in the gardens. In addition, Nessacus now houses the Special Education Department. The principal at Nessacus is James Stankiewicz.

Wahconah Regional High School

Attendance on opening day shows that 731 students from all the towns in the district are enrolled in grades 9 through 12 at Wahconah Regional High School at 150 Windsor Road. The high school offers a comprehensive scholastic program, and is noted for its prowess on the baseball field and basketball court. The school also has excellent drama and music departments. The Principal is Thomas Callahan.

Vocational training is available to high school students in the district at Taconic and Pittsfield High Schools in Pittsfield, Westfield Vocational School in Westfield, McCann Vocational School in North Adams, or Smith Vocational School in Northampton. Deadline for notifying the C.B.R.S.D. Superintendent is April 1st preceding the fall of expected enrollment.

Enrollment at St. Agnes School at 30 Carson Avenue is 165 for K – 8th grade and 34 in their pre-school program. On graduating from the 8th grade, students will move on to St. Joseph's High School in Pittsfield or to Wahconah High School in Dalton. The school offers a challenging curriculum, Faith Formation opportunities (daily prayer, liturgies, para-liturgical services and sacramental preparation), Enrichment courses in Spanish, computer, music and physical education. The principal is Theresa Dudjiak.

The school offers half day program for 3 year olds and offers both full day and half day for 4 year olds. Extended care is offered for students from 7:10 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

The school received their accreditation on December 5, 2001 from the National Education Association for School and College. The N.E.A.S.C. process gives schools the chance to look at all aspects of their programs and evaluates both the curriculum and faculty. St. Agnes is the fifth school in the Diocese to be accredited.

Tuition assistance is available for qualified families through the Diocese of Springfield and St. Agnes parish.
