Articles on this page: LIBRARY LIBRARY Dalton Free Public Library 462 Main Street, 684-6112 The Dalton Free Public Library has a collection of over 40,000 books, nearly 1500 books on cassette and CD, over 1100 videos and DVDs, and a small collection of CD-ROMs to borrow. The library also houses a small local history collection and has a number of genealogical sources on CD-ROMs for reference. A collection of music CDs will soon be added. Computers with access to the Internet and electronic databases and a word processing program are available for public use. Dependent upon available funding, plans are under way to construct a new 18,900 square foot library on the land adjacent to the old Dalton High School. The library has many programs designed to encourage reading and for the informational and recreational needs of the community. Patrons may borrow books which the library does not own through the inter-library loan system. Delivery of books on a regular basis to the homebound can be arranged with the librarian. A monthly book discussion group for adults has resumed in September. It is generally held on the last Wednesday of the month and continues through April (with the exception of December). All adults are welcome to join this informal group. Storytime programs for pre-school children will be held on Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m. in conjunction with the Central Berkshire Community Partnership. These programs will begin on October 7th and will be held every week through May except holidays, school vacations and snow days. A reading program for children is available each summer. This past summer over 200 children registered for the program. The Friends of the Dalton Free Public Library, Inc. publish a newsletter and organize various activities including an annual book sale to supplement the funds of the library. Membership forms are available at the library. For more information about its services and programs, contact the library at 684-6112. The library entrance is on the Main Street side of the Town Hall.
