The dormant Berkshire Public Theatre on Union Street in Pittsfield will come alive this summer as the Berkshire Music Hall.

Ray Schilke bought the theatre and neighboring Octagon House in October 2003. He plans to develop it as a theater and performing arts facility for the downtown area.

"Eight months after buying the property, we are in pretty good shape and are hoping for an early summer opening," Schilke said.

He plans to present local and national theatrical and musical groups. "We've formed strong ties with the Colonial Theatre and will work with them this summer to present two of their productions at our theater," Schilke stated.

Both buildings have been inactive for several years. It took nearly four months just to remove the rubbish and prepare the buildings for renovation. The theater space is now ready for the installation of new utility systems, additional restrooms and more than 700 seats. There will be an orchestra and balcony area when it is finished.

Schilke is doing some of the renovation work himself. He will utilize his sound company, Ins & Outs, Inc. in the new Berkshire Music Hall as well as for other area performances.

"The Berkshire Music Hall will operate year-round and become a destination for live music, movies, theater and dance patrons. I know this will give a much needed boost to downtown Pittsfield," added Schilke.
