Recreational Programs

Department of Parks and Recreation

The Department of Community Services/Parks & Recreation is responsible for overseeing the City's extensive park system, which encompasses over 1,300 acres. These acres include playgrounds, athletic fields, a street hockey rink, a skateboard park, tennis courts, open space, beaches and a semi-pro baseball stadium. In addition, this department sponsors activities such as supervised summer recreation programs, various organized athletic leagues, fishing derbies, the annual Halloween Parade, Easter Egg Hunt and Winter Carnival.
FREE SUMMER OUTDOOR MOVIES: Friday nights, July 9 - August 13, beginning at dusk at the First Street Common. Friday, July 23 is the teen night movie at Wahconah Park.

Pittsfield Family Activity Centers

Boys' and Girls' Club
16 Melville St., 448-8258. The club provides facilities and leaders for a wide range of sports and other activities for a modest membership. An ice rink is used for hockey and figure skating. There is a swimming pool and Camp Russell is offered in the summer.

Catholic Youth Center
26 Melville St., 445-5496. Instructional basketball leagues for boys and girls, teen service society, after-school day care and social activities for children of all faiths are offered for inexpensive fees, many in cooperation with the Boys Club. Activities for all ages are offered in the summer at Camp St. Michael on Cascade Street.

4-H Club
44 Bank Row, 448-8285. Activities through the year, culminating with a fair in the summer.

Girls Inc.
165 East St., 442-5174. Specialized services for young women including swimming classes, pre-teen and teen groups, pre-school groups and day care for infants through elders. Summer activities including day camp at camps Stevenson- Witawentin.

Great Trails Council - Boy Scouts of America
684-3542. A number of troops meet in various churches and schools around the city. Membership drives are held in the fall.

Girl Scouts of Western Massachusetts
110 South St., 445-5226/1-800-462-9100. A number of troops meet around the city under the auspices of the Western Mass. Girl Scout Council which also operates Camp Marion White in the summer.

Pittsfield YMCA
292 North St., 499-7650. Programs for all ages are offered for various fees. Athletic leagues, parent-child groups and day care are available. A pool is used by all ages for a wide range of activities. A weight room, nautilus and sauna are available. Camp Sumner at Ponterril is operated in the summer.
