Williams campus organizations:

Many have connections to off-campus

At Williams College, more than 100 campus organizations exist to serve the extracurricular needs of Williams students. Their leadership changes yearly, and many operate with significant autonomy. But all are monitored and supervised by the College Council.

Williams has produced this year a new Campus Life Guide, with listings current as of July 11, 2003. What follows are selected excerpts of information about some of the campus organizations with activities that may extend to off-campus constituencies. The excerpts were written by the organizations themselves. Notations in parentheses after names are email addresses which preceed @williams.edu.)

For the most up to date information, visit the Dean of Students website at: www.williams.edu/dean/activities

College Council (Student Government)

The College Council is the governing body of the Williams College student body. Its members are elected by dormitories and by students at-large and represent their constituencies in campus issues of interest to students, such as the policies of administrative bodies, the actions of student organizations and aspects of residential life. In addition, College Council collects a Student Activities Tax. By this tax, all student organizations and Club Sports teams may be funded.

Initiative for Student Health in Elementary Schools

Williams Initiative for Student Health in Elementary School (WISHES)is focused on improving communit y health for children in nor thern Berkshire Count y schools. We assist in teaching health lessons in elementar y school both through one-day health fair events and continuous work as teachers'assistants. We have a par tnership with REACH communit y health foundation to pilot a comprehensive health study and series of new health programming for this county's children. With this local organization which has received state funding to improve health education, we are working to improve children's early exposure to understanding and choosing a healthy lifest yle. We work most closely with the local Williamstown Elementar y School for many of these projects, although the scope is much broader and continues throughout the county.

WCFM 91.9 FM

Broadcasting at 91.9 megahertz with 1.1 kilowatts of antenna power, WCFM's signal can be heard quite clearly in that special place where Vermont, New York and Massachusetts meet . . . the Berkshires. And,what is there to hear? Commercial and format-free radio. At WCFM,we don't preprogram. We don 't tell our DJs what they can and can't play. We don't play the hits to capture our market and we don 't force our programming into bland blocks of similar style. This is freeform. It 's not the next big thing, it 's not trendy and it's almost certainly not the future of radio. At any given time you might hear Acid Jazz, Classical,Heavy Metal or Novelty. DJs do this because they love the music, and they want to share.

ACT is a group located on campus made up of students, staff, faculty, and community members who come together to educate and

inspire discussion within the larger Williams College and Williamstown community about specific, mainly political, issues of international and domestic importance.

Our role is largely educational with an action component. We will educate the student body and then facilitate their action upon the issue in question.

Our goal is to concentrate on one specific issue, which is current and relevant, and to build a campaign around it.

We bring speakers to the College, set-up educational displays and distribute educational materials throughout the campus and community.
