Articles on this page: Berkshire Young Careerist Captures District Award
Berkshire Young Careerist Captures District Award One of the many programs Berkshire BPW organizes each year to recognize area working women and their endeavors is the Young Careerist (YC) Program. We have had excellent, local young careerist programs and they have been very successful over the years. Some of our past YC recipients are Teresa Marquis, Suzanne LaPierre, Anne Marie Carpenter, Stephanie French, and Anne Herbert. Dominica Bernardo of Pittsfield was named the 2004 Berkshire BPW and Western District Young Careerist. She competed locally in Pittsfield and at the district level in Williamstown. At the state level she was named runner up. The local program is held in February and Berkshire BPW asks local business people to nominate women that they feel fit the YC criteria. Candidates must be between the ages of 21 and 35; have been employed for at least one year in fulltime work experience and be involved in their community. This year Dominica was joined by two other nominees: Christine Schaefer, Catering Sales Manager of Cranwell Resort, Spa and Golf Club in Lenox and Heather McCusker, Associate Director of United Veterans of America, Inc. In the competition, the nominees are judged on a prepared speech, a written biography, an interview process and group interaction. The Berkshire BPW Young Careerist then goes on to district and has the opportunity to advance to state and national competitions. The speech topic chosen is related to the National BPW Legislative Platform. This year the topic was, "The idea of the superwoman is pervasive in our society and "having it all" is often viewed as the norm. As a mentor, what advice would you give to young women who must make conscious choices with lasting consequences?" Bernardo says of her experience, "the most rewarding part of the YC experience was witnessing the tremendous support of family and friends. In the chaos of everyday life, it is far too easy to take the people closest to you for granted, when in reality, one of the greatest gifts we can have is to be surrounded by people who not only love us, but believe in us." She is employed by KB Toys in Pittsfield as a merchandise planner. She is an active member of Berkshire BPW and The Berkshire Museum. She has also been involved with the Berkshire Chamber and Berkshire Young Professionals. The 2005 Berkshire BPW Young Careerist Competition will occur on Monday, February 7, 2005. It is never too early to nominate a woman for the 2005 program.
